Formerly Frumpy Friday. Chic on the Street.

Had to miss a week of fashion awesomeness because I was in Charolotte, North Carolina getting my dance on new material to share with all of you Mom Awesome Formerly Frumpistas!

Excited much?!

Let’s hope!

Because it not only gives you a chance to be featured on pBd, but it also gives me a chance to show all of you more ridiculous photos of myself that kicking the frumpy is easy and fun!  And, moms everywhere manage to do it on a daily basis!

Welcome to: Chic on the Street!

Real moms, wearing real clothing, to real places: the park, the soccer field, the forest surrounding the soccer field where your kid likes to pee because the outhouse is so hot and nasty it makes him sweat his undies soggy and gag uncontrollably.

I’ve talked to people about my What NOT to Wear experience until I’m blue in the face.  And, the one question I get more than any other is: Are you still friends with the person who nominated you? But did they buy you any real clothes?

And the answer is a resounding YES!

But, not only did they buy me real clothing that I could afford at home when having a particularly fruitful work year, they also taught me how to find styles that look good on my body even though I pretty much do all of my shopping at Target, Ross, Marshall’s, and H&M.

Take this look for example (please ignore my purposefully-nonchalant-but-really-just-awkward pose).  Nothing featured here was purchase by the What NOT to Wear people…

And nothing purchased, from the shoes to adorable necklace cost more than $50.  And the whole thing, didn’t set me back more than $100!

I kid you not.  The dress was $5.99!  Not a typo.  Five dollars and ninety-nine cents from Ross.  The jacket was under $20 from H&M and the necklace…

Which I am all kinds of in love with, cost me $6 at the thrift shop!

The.  Thrift.  Shop, yo!  I strongly urge you to visit one.  It’s not the polyester covered, granny-hoarder paradise, little shop of horrors I always imagined it to be!

I fully intend to stalk this place until I bring home all of their little pretties.

I can’t link you to all of my favorite things at my favorite thrift store, but I can point you to a few good fashion steals you can pick up to up the awesome of your current wardrobe.

5 Affordable Fashion Finds to Snag This Week

1.  Foldover Clutches.  I found this one on my favorite new site, Uncovet.  It’s awesome.  They find the most adorable stuff.  And I look at it daily.  Because you never know when you’re going to happen across a canvas foldover clutch that makes your heart sing!

2.  Leather cuffs.  These are a handmade step up from the ones you may have rocked in your high school rebel days.  I missed that life phase entirely, so this is the best I can do.

3.  Colorful light weight scarves.  Because they dress up a white tank top and a flowy skirt and sandals so effortlessly.

4.  Cute sandals.  Because I don’t think I can write a fashion post and NOT mention shoes.  Plus, I think everyone needs a cute pair of beach to blogging conference flip flops.

5.  An oversized bag.  For stuffing your pool junk into.  Or your kids.

Found a summer steal you think I should know about?

Or want to share a photo of your Chic on the Street look with us?!

Just leave a comment and I’ll stalk you down (which is code for send you an email; don’t get creepy on my people!).

  1. You look great! I love your shoes. :-)

    • Dumb Mom says:

Thanks! I love them too and they don’t even hurt! They are actually comfortable until I try to walk all over Charlotte and get my dance on in them. Then we have issues!

  2. I am obsessed with leather cuffs! Must find the perfect one soon. And those shoes…I love them! :)

You were at TypeA weren’t you? Now I’m bummed we didn’t actually meet.

  3. I’m so, so bad at fashion. For real. That’s why I like stores that when I go in they see me walking around with something and say, “hey try this with that.” My Lane Bryant does that and I end up getting really cute outfits there because they have real sales people that HELP you and give good advice.

    • Dumb Mom says:

That’s an important part of developing a sense of style though I think. Getting good advice and then learning how to incorporate what feels good to you into what others have helped you determine actually looks good on you.

  4. Heidi Friesen says:

It’s nice to see that your What Not To Wear experience translated into something you can use in real life, and not necessarily just in New York city. You have a great sense of style and I love that you pulled off this outfit on a budget even I could afford!

    • Dumb Mom says:

I know, right?! The shoes are the only thing that I even had to think about before buying. And they are earning their keep by being in heavy rotation in my wardrobe.

  5. Love this post because it gives me some inspiration! LOVE that necklace. Necklaces are my favorite way to jazz up any outfit.

  6. LOVE this Chic on the Street feature!! Fantastic finds Mama! You look great!!

  7. SUCH a cute outfit – and the amazing price makes it even better!!!

I love stores like Ross – you can get such great deals. Except when I bring my three kids, then I turn into the crazy lady who keeps yelling “Where did you go?” and “Don’t touch that?” and “Now where did you go?” Those stores are best when Mama is alone ;-)

  8. I have a similar dress – from Target that I picked up for under $10! Are you like me and when someone compliments your outfit, you have to tell them how much it cost because it was such a good deal? My husband totally does not get that….

    • Dumb Mom says:

Yes! I want them to know about the steal! And I’m always so proud of myself for looking good on the cheap. Not sure why.

  9. By Summer fashion steal, you must mean the leather and linen Hilfiger bag I snagged for $10 at the consignment shop today.

    Top. That.

  10. You look great in that dress! Love the clutch & that leather bracelet! I will have to visit a thrift store soon! I donate a lot of clothes but never end up looking around!

  11. I love those flip-flops, the leather cuff and the bag they are awesome, and would go with anything. Pretty much the whole stinkin’ thing. Stopping by from Fashion Friday.

  12. Ross is the move always. Good to find a nice dress or top for the low in there.

I’m all about Chic on the street!

  13. This is an adorable idea.

You are so creative with your posts.

I’ve got to get it together over here and start knocking my head for some good fresh stuff.

    Also: you have great legs.
