Wordful Wednesday. #TypeACon

What happens at Type A stays at Type A gets blogged about incessantly by every single one of the 300 or so bloggers who attend the thing.

And, quite frankly, as much as I like to pride myself on being unique and innovative and junk, I’m no different in this regard.

I fully intend to present to you a variety of blog posts alluding to, referring to, or straight up talking about the amazingness of my 4 day stint in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Because it was just that exciting for me.

Clearly, I don’t get out much.  Certainly not enough to prevent my jaw from making contact with the floor while at a club watching some chick who appeared to be categorically opposed to panties on the back of a mechanical bull.

I’m convinced us dance-party deprived moms can’t go anywhere.

Two drinks in and we were Howling at the Moon and then dancing like it’s 1999 around our suitcase sized purses (which we’d unceremoniously deposited in the middle of the dance floor) with some random Chilean businessmen at a mostly empty nightclub.

In order to save my self image, I’ve blocked the majority of our Charlotte shenanigans from my memory, but I sort of have a hazy recollection of Billie Jean, Sir Mix A-Lot and teaching a stumbly drunk chick how to Dougie.  And the bull.  I will never forget the bull no matter how hard I’ve tried to purge the image from my mind.

I have spent the last 3 days untagging myself on Facebook and denying allegations that I may or may not have been filmed shaking what my mama gave me at an 80s party in a lace dress.

I often get asked by bloggers whether or not I think they should go to a blogging conference.  I always answer them the same way: Um, heck yeah!

Here’s why.

5 Reasons You Should Go to a Blogging Conference

1.  Kid free travel.  Sure, lots of conferences have childcare so you can bring your little people with you.  But, bump all that noise.  One of my favorite parts about going to conferences is the opportunity to enjoy the local social scene; sample the food, check out some hot spots, photo bomb my own photos so I can throw up the deuces in front of awesome street dancers.  It’s just my thing!

Mostly, I don’t want to miss out on all of the culinary awesome because I have to fight with my finicky preschooler who won’t eat anything other than Fruit Loops and a side of sauce-less pasta.

2.  Learning to be awesome.  Certainly not all conferences are created equal when it comes to their real educational offerings, but I’ve not yet been to one that has absolutely nothing to offer.  Even if you get to the conference and you feel like popping your collar because you already know everything they are saying, it still feels good to be surrounded by like minded individuals who aren’t confused when you say your domain name is up for renewal and you’re considering a move from blogger to a self-hosted word press site.

3.  Opportunities to connect.  With sponsors.  With other bloggers.  With random people you meet while hitting a dance floor in town.  It’s all about connecting and growing your networks.  Which can easily be done while getting your Just Dance on at an 80s party.

4.  Opportunities to reconnect.  Many of us work for brands remotely and rarely have the chance to meet the people who you email and DM and conference call with throughout the year.  I love going to these events to put faces to Twitter handles.  For me, spending time with my Blog Frog buds and my friends in the Toyota Women’s Influencers Network was just as important as being able to connect with new brands and bloggers I hope to enjoy a relationship with in the future.

5.  Photo oppps with friends.  Perhaps I have a problem.  And am clearly a camera hog.

  11. Teresha says:

This post is the best PSA for blogging conferences I have seen!

  12. That looks like it was a super fun conference. Now I’m even more jealous.

  13. Hey!! So, I’ve just recently started blogging. I haven’t done anything fancy to it because I don’t know where to start!!! Anyway, I plan to attend Bloggy Bootcamp in September, is this a conference worth attending???

  14. That first pictures is awesome!

And, one day, one day I’ll be able to go to one.

  15. I absolutely love that shot for #3. It is a good slap in the face that I am clearly not having as much fun as I could be :) AWESOME!

  16. This looks like so much fun! I may have to put it on my maybe list for next year! I’m going to Blogher in a month for the first time, I can’t WAIT!!

    • Dumb Mom says:

I will be at BlogHer, you will be at BlogHer. We need to exchange numbers. So I can send you group texts about where to meet for hugs!

  17. It was so great to meet you at Type A.

    • Dumb Mom says:

You too! You are so quiet in person. And I’m so boisterous, and, um, loud. Hope I didn’t freak you out with my crazy!

  18. It cant get much better than that. It looks like you all had a blast. I will make it to a blogging conference someday if it kills me! I think they should use this post as a promo for the conference. How could you NOT want to go next year! LOL! I love all the pics especially the first one and the one of you all dancing! Priceless entertainment!

    • Dumb Mom says:

They SHOULD use this post as a promo for the conference. I mean, that top photo alone is enough to make people want to go there, right?!

  19. I had such a blast! TypeACon was awesome for a blog con newbie. It was great to meet you. Can’t wait to meet up again!

    • Dumb Mom says:

      See you at BlogHer?!

      • I’m still VERY on the fence. I got so much out of #typeacon, I think my head might explode if I don’t spend some time acting on it. If I come, I may just get a party pass, I don’t know if I can handle another round of sessions just yet.

  20. Chelsey says:

I was considering Blissdm next year. Don’t know. Looks like you were crazy! ;)

  21. Looks like a blast!! Love all your pictures, but there is a special place in hell for people who snap pictures of other people while DANCING. I can’t possibly focus on my dance moves AND the camera at the same time…I have so much to learn from you.

    • Dumb Mom says:

Yeah, wasn’t focusing. That’s why there were at least 5 that I had to delete. And threaten bodily harm to anyone who tagged me in them on Facebook. There is a special place in Hell for people who tag other people in disgusting photos of themseleves. And, I should probably reflect and figure out why that happens to me so often!

  22. I have only ever been to BlogHer so far, but I am determined to go to a “smaller” (more intimate) conference next year! See ya in August!

  23. Becca - Our Crazy Boys says:

Ahhh!! That looks like SO much fun!!

I love that you got photos of yourself! I never do!

    • Dumb Mom says:

I mostly got those photos courtesy of other people who thought it’d be funny to snap a picture of me and my shenanigans. Plus, I make people take photos with me so I can blog about them later!

  24. Someday I’ll go to a conference … when someone wants to sponsor me. And when I do, the highlight will be getting my picture taken with you (after freaking out that I’m finally actually meeting you in person). I’m not sure a camera could handle that much Dude Mom awesome. :)

    • Dumb Mom says:

Yes! You should get yourself to a conference. It makes you feel like blogging is a real thing. And something you don’t want to quit. Sure the feeling may fade when you get back and haven’t slept for 5 days straight and your kids are all clingy and needy and junk. But, it’s a great feeling while you’re there!

  25. That looks like so much fun. One of these days I’ll work up my nerve. ’til then… you are rockin it!

    • Dumb Mom says:

I love going to conferences. You make so many amazing friends in this space that it really feels great to be able to actually meet them and talk to them without the need for an Internet connection.

  26. I LOVE your dance party photo. It’s awesome. It’s one of those photos you hope someone takes without having to be like “this is a cool moment please take a photo for me while we pretend it isn’t planned”

    • Dumb Mom says:

Lol. We were all up in the grill of the person in charge of taking photos beforehand. Like, stand here, snap pictures, don’t get distracted, we will hurt you.

  27. Arnebya says:

STILL angry. But still glad you had a good time. Come ooooooon, August!

    • Dumb Mom says:

Yep, need to add you to the people I must meet up to hug list. And, did your friends tell you I met them?!

  28. This is fantastic. That first photo cracks me up every time. Your face is priceless!! Must frame it.

I need to get my post up. Miss you!! xo.

  29. I loved following along with you on Instagram. Hope you don’t mind all my comments : ) It looks like you enjoyed every last minute. I have this feeling bloggers in general are just a genuinely great group of gals/guys.
    Dana

    • Dumb Mom says:

Of course I don’t mindyour comments. I LOVE your comments. I actually want to comment back all the time, but I don’t think anyone sees those. Do you see it when I comment back to you? If I @ you?! And MOST bloggers are fun. MOST.

  30. Pretty sure this post is the argument against befriending bloggers (AKA Here is my 80s clad pelvis on the internet)… I am counting down the days until BlogHer! You are hilarious and make a great cowgirl.

    • Dumb Mom says:

Yeah, yeah. But that top pic is TOTALLY an argument FOR befriending ME! We do such great photos together! We have to hang out at BlogHer. We should get adjoining rooms. So we can plot our next photo opps!

  31. I will be at BlogHer where I will text you obsessively until you come give me a hug. After which I will follow you around like a love struck puppy. Or something like that.

    • Dumb Mom says:

Wait a minute. Who gave you my number? Kidding! Yes, I’m making a BlogHer text ring. And designating a spot. And I will sit there and text and wait 15 minutes for people to show up and let me hug on them. It’s the only way!

  32. FUN!!!!! Wish I could have been there!

  33. Awesome!!! Love that first picture… all kinds of fabulous!!!!!

  34. Hanging with you was one of my fav parts of TypeA..so awesome. xoxo

    • Dumb Mom says:

Me too, you! And your fashion. Seriously, I wanted to take a photo of you every day but I didn’t want to seem creepy:)!

  35. SHUT UP. THAT’S YOU?

I’m such an idiot. I saw you like 900x throughout the conference and only later on realized I never actually MET you. Then I look here and am like, wait. She was there? What?

Then I look at the pictures and realize though I could probably point out your kids in a crowd, I had no idea what you looked like. *headsmack!* So intelligent, I am.

I’m sorry we didn’t really talk, because you look like a lot of fun.:P Next time!

    • Dumb Mom says:

Yes! And we sat at a table together the very first day. And I thought I knew you, but then I thought, maybe not, because she doesn’t know me. And I didn’t want to do that awkward, um, I think we know each other thing where you could be all, um, no we don’t. Are you going to BlogHer?! We can have a do over!

  36. I thought I commented but apparently I didn’t. Because I suck. But this was the best, most fun recap ever. And I look super awkward in that TWIN picture. Go figure.
