Clearly staying safe online is something that I am passionate about as a digital mom.
I’ve shared tons of tips for keeping yourself and your children safe while using the Internet to do your bidding.
Oh, you missed them?
Let me refresh your memory:
- Keeping Kids Safe Online
- Great Tips for Safe Family Travel
- When to Get Your Child a Cell Phone
- And, everyone’s favorite: the one where I am GIVING AWAY A FREE TABLET!
Recently we have seriously been discussing the desire for #1 to get a mobile phone.
Let me get this out of the way right now: he is not asking us for one (he rarely asks us for anything actually) anymore (see above link entitled, When to Get Your Child a Cell Phone, to learn about that-one-time-he-sorta-mentioned-it-in-passing-and-I-laughed-and-said-no).
Dumb Dad and I have begun to discuss it amongst ourselves because he has tutoring and a number of other activities that tend to end at unpredictable times (yes, tutoring ends whenever
crazy tutor lady says he finishes his daily assignment; maybe 15 minutes, maybe 2 hours, your guess is as good as mine!) and, because I am the only parent available to drive children places in this family after school, I have found myself wishing numerous times that he had a way to contact me when he was finished with his activity.
You know so I could spend those 2 hours getting grocery shopping done, instead of sitting in the car breaking up fights between his younger siblings while also trying not to die of heat stroke. Or freeze to death. As the case may be.
I’ve toyed with the idea of doing the prepaid thing and then a friend told me about the beauty of Kajeet.
Pretty much the video explains it all right?!
He can have a phone, use it to call only just me and his dad (and maybe his Mimi because I know she’s a touch stalkerish like that and will be calling him anyway) when he’s done with tutoring and ready to be picked up.
He can use it to play the apps that he’s always killing my phone battery playing.
And, he can listen to music at night too (something he’s always borrowing my iPad to do).
Plus, it can grow with him too!
We were planning to gift him with a limited cell phone for his 12th birthday. This way, when he turns 12, we can just gift him with additional privileges! You know, if he earns them.
Which is another awesome benefit.
I can institute a reward system with this phone: he meets his responsibilities each week/month/whatever, and he can be rewarded with additional bank in his Kajeet account so that he can download junk items for Mindcraft, or, whatever he’s harassing me about at the time.
School just started yesterday and already I’m wishing we’d purchased this weeks ago instead of, um, two seconds ago.
Guess I’ll be sitting outside of tutoring sweating my hair out and trying not to shove my smaller children in the trunk to stop the madness.
*Please note: Calm down. No need to call the authorities,
I don’t have a trunk to shove my children into. But, if I
did, so help me.
kajeet™ is a great cell phone solution for parents who, like me, want to stay connected, know where their kids are, and keep them safe online.
