One of Dude 3’s all time favorite movies as a toddler was Cars.
It was already an older flick when he encountered it (it came out in 2006 and he wasn’t even born until 2008), but that kid LOVED his Lightning McQueen.
The story touched him in ways I’m not sure another film truly has (it even inspired a movement in our home), and he watched it repeatedly which left me with a 2 year old who could recite the words verbatim. Or, as verbatim as a jumbly mouthed 2 year old could manage.
He’d slide into the kitchen with an overzealous, “CACHOW!” at least once a day and he rarely went places without his little Lightning McQueen racer in tow.
Of course he fell a little out of touch with the Cars crew as he got older and sidetracked by other interests (Legos have taken up a huge part of his brain since about age 4, and right now he can’t go to sleep without watching a Dude Perfect video on YouTube), but a soft spot in his heart remains for Lightning.
Which explains his enthusiasm about being the first of his friends to see Cars 3 earlier this summer (we went to a screener before it came out), his desire to rock his New Balance Cars edition kicks, and the Ultimate Lightning McQueen.
When I told him Sphero was sending him the Ultimate Lightning McQueen Racecar to check out, he typed it into the Amazon search bar to get more info himself (because that’s what you do when you’re an Internet savvy 9 year old), and promptly proceeded to freak out.
FINALLY, his mother gets him something amazing (never mind the all-expense paid trip to Disney I took him on, not once, but twice) -the best toy car of all time!
He was so, SO excited –telling all of his friends he was getting a Lightning McQueen car and they’d have to come over to his house to race it when it arrives.
And then it did, and his little mind was more blown than ever!
Even I was impressed with the awesome of this car.
Definitely not the RC car of my youth, the Ultimate Lightning McQueen is interactive in ways kids of today have come to appreciate and expect. He’s interactive, he’s expressive, with emotive eyes and moving lips, and he’s downright fun to play with.
We all agree that it is the best toy car we’ve ever owned.
First, you should get to know him in Dude 3’s video.

It is awesome!
Now, let’s talk as moms.
The Ultimate Lightning McQueen: A Mom’s Review of The Best Toy Car
It’s easy to use.
Some app directed toys we’ve had in the past have been a major pain to use. This one hasn’t given us any issues yet. It paired quickly and easily with his iPad (he did it himself). It worked without a bunch of account setup. And, the control pad is intuitive and easy to navigate.
It is a bunch of fun.
I’ve never seen a toy so interactive and responsive before. Lightning talks while you play (in that Owen Wilson, signature voice we all know and love). You can even watch the Cars movie together and Lightning will interact with the film. And it’s not an annoying loop of the same phrase over and over again making you want to drop kick it into the toy box. He has a multitude of phrases that he pulls out from time to time as your child interacts with him. Will you hear them all eventually? Yes, and probably quite quickly if your kid plays with it as much as mine does, but somehow there are still enough that it’s not super repetitive or terribly annoying.
It costs a bundle.
I’m not gonna lie, this isn’t a cheapo toy you buy last minute when you realize your Christmas list didn’t quite pan out. This is signature gift material right here (and you may want to order one early if you are planning to have one under your tree this year). The Ultimate Lightning McQueen is going to set you back close to $300. But, and you guys know I don’t say this lightly, it is TOTALLY worth it based solely on how much time we’ve already played with it. Unlike some of the other technology based, high-end toys we’ve invested in previously that sit in the bottom of the toy box forever disconnected from the charger we probably donated to Goodwill by mistake, Lightening has gotten played with. For hours already. And he doesn’t seem to be losing interest. Ask me about the robot he got two Christmases ago, though. Never mind, don’t ask me.
