Arguably Awesome: How to be the Best Coupon Mom

Because, seriously, you guys. You know I don’t know a thing about being a coupon mom.

I know about awesome cash back shopping opportunities and saving on cute clothes. But, like actual go-to-the-store-with-your-plastic-billfold-and-buy-all-the-Apple-Jacks couponing.

No.

Because, for me, even frugal living is hard.

I’m not going to say I’m wasteful or anything, and I LOVE like a good BOGO sale at the shoe store, but I just like what I like and I’m not generally willing to sacrifice time or quality for an entire day spent hovering over circulars cutting out coupons or searching for deals on an app while the lady in line behind me at the Dollar Store sighs heavily.

I can’t be that person. I won’t be that person.

I don’t have time. I can’t spare the effort. I like Target better than Walmart. I just really, really do.

Add to that the fact that I stink at budgeting, I’m awful at record keeping and, my memory is shot and my ability to land a spot on one of those extreme couponer shows is nonexistent.

If I’m going to go out of my way to save money it needs to be easy, convenient (like I don’t need a bra or pants convenient), intuitive, and quick. Because for me, time is money. I value it more than I value the extra $37 I could save a year by downloading an app or cutting out coupons.

And, I don’t want 6 boxes of Apple Jacks. I will just eat them all and be sad.

Groupon Coupons (which was intriguing based, if nothing else, on the rhymeyness of it’s name) seems to be exactly what I am looking for.

It’s easy to use from the comfort of my couch and they work with retailers and brands I purchase from regularly. I can shop for cute shoes and save money while polishing off the second season of Fantasy Island, no bra needed, cookies allowed. Yaaaaassssss.

Because I know couponing is a hard sell for many of you, let me give you some examples of how it can work for those of us who aren’t THAT devoted to the process…

Say you’re looking for a dress for a fancy schmansy party you have to go to. You will likely never wear said dress again because you don’t do a lot in the fancy schmansy division and by the time you need it again it will either a) be dramatically out of style or, b) be dramatically too small. After all day looking you find this dress at Banana Republic…

You gasp at how pretty it is, but also at the price tag because $140 is kind of more dollars than you wanted to pay for just a dress you will likely wear once.

But it’s perfect. And you love it. And you really want to look fly for this event you’re attending because, gosh, you deserve to.

So, you add it to your cart even though your hand is shaking a teeny bit.

For reassurance, you text your husband (reenacted due to language)…

Me: I found the perfect dress for that thing. It’s $140…

Husband: $140, holy crap, is it made of bacon?!

Me: You just need to know that my love for bacon is dramatically less than yours seems to be.

His response baffles you because, really? Bacon? And also, it wasn’t a clean don’t buy it, but it also wasn’t a hey-girl-make-it-rain.

So, you do what you should’ve done from the start anyway and text your bestie (reenacted due to language)…

Me: Found a dress. Super cute. I would kill it. Like $140 though…

BFF: Whatever. If you’ll look hot in it, it’s worth it. Totally.

Me: Dude. I love you.

So you add it to your cart.

But, before you go to check out you remember that Groupon might have a coupon to make this purchase exactly right for you (and your husband).

You were going to buy it regardless, but the 35% off Banana Republic coupon you find there makes you feel WAY less guilty about it and convinces you that, yup, you need this bracelet too!

Now, go ahead and dance in your kitchen because taking like 35 seconds to check for that coupon allowed you to snag that dress and a bracelet to match for less than it would’ve cost you just for the dress all by its lonesome.
