I Sent My Kid Back to School with A Moldy Sandwich and Other Things That Have Already Happened This School Year

We are all the way totally back to school.

In fact, this Thursday will mark a month of The Dudes being back to the classroom with with their friends.

The weather isn’t convinced, but school, and sports, and the fact that the sun sets before we make it home most evenings has me convinced that fall is here.

I want to say the transition back to the classroom has been seamless –with three dudes at three schools, two of which are hallmark years (first in high school and first in middle school), some hiccups were expected.

I will say that my back to school prep work has made them minimal –a couple of forgotten items and a lunch debacle I’m still beating myself up about top the list but, other than that, things have been pretty uneventful.

Comical, but uneventful.

Naturally The Dudes have had plenty to say about the first couple of weeks back.

Dude House Sounds: Back to School Season

On Suspicious Lunch Fare

Dude 3: Mom, don’t get mad but I couldn’t eat lunch today. Something was off with that meat. It was slimy and it smelled weird. And I swear I tried, but I just started gagging when I did it.

On Things Boys Do

Dude 3: I told a boy joke today.

Me: A boy joke? What is a boy joke?

Dude 3: One where the punch line is balls.

On Being the Smartest

Dude 2: I am pretty sure I am the smartest person in my LA class.

Me: Really? Why?

Dude 2: It’s just a vibe I’m getting. I will let you know for sure after this quiz on Friday though.

On Me Being Right

Me: So, did you have time to go to your locker before school?

Dude 1: …………… yes?

Me: ………………..

Dude 1: Ok, no.

Me: Dude! Why did you lie?

Dude 1: Because I know you’d just tell me a long thing about why I should have and about how I need to and I figured we could just not do that, because I know and you’re right.

Me:

On the Power of Positive Thinking

Dude 2: I so do not want to go to school tomorrow.

Me: Oh! But I thought you were enjoying it.

Dude 2: I was just trying that “positive thinking” thing to change my thoughts to make me think I loved it, but I don’t because at the end of the day it’s still school and really I’d just rather stay home and sleep in and go to the pool and stuff.

On the Fairness of Life

Dude 3: It’s not fair that you get to stay home all day.

Me: Well, I’m not just home, I’m also working.

Dude 3: I know, but you don’t have to wear shoes or pants and you can get snacks whenever you want.

Me: True.

Dude 3: I can’t wait to grow up and work from home just like you.

Me: Do you even know what I do?

Dude 3: Yes, but it honestly doesn’t matter.

On Mondays

Dude 3: Now I know what people mean when they say they have a case of the Mondays.

Me: But, it’s Tuesday.

Dude 3: And it stinks, just like Monday did.
