**We received a mattress from Sweet Zzz to facilitate the creation of this post.**
We decided it was time to shop for a mattress when we moved into our new home.
We’d had our previous mattress for almost 15 years and it was beginning to look and feel like the dinosaur that it was.
When we dragged it out to the curb for pickup the night before our scheduled bulk trash date, I was almost embarrassed to leave it for my neighbors to see as they drove to work the next morning. It looked remarkably like it had come from the back porch of some abandoned crack house and not the “in great condition” oak bed frame we’d listed on Craigslist for $250 after we dragged the mattress away.
In our defense, we’d co-slept with three babies on that thing and we all know the evil that is the diaper blowout. And let’s not even talk about the years of healthy and sick toddlers that bed helped comfort. Let’s just say the suspicious looking stains, dips, divots, and dust mites were all very well earned.
So we hauled it out there and started the arduous process of finding a new one to take to our new home.
In 2003 when we purchased that mattress, buying a mattress online was not a thing. Instead, you drove around town to various department stores, mattress sellers and warehouses, maybe timed it with the high school mattress selling fundraiser, and, after lusting over the idea that you might wake up a millionaire and get to bring home one of those remote controlled feels-like-you’re-alseep-on-a-cloud-in-Heaven sets, you buy something from a brand you’ve probably never heard of and hope like heck you haven’t signed yourself up for a lifetime of chronic backpain.
In 2018, nothing is the same anymore, we are basically the Jetsons, and you can buy pretty much buy anything you want online, including a mattress.
After countless hours of research, we wound up getting our mattress from a furniture store nearby (we had a credit, and a huge discount from a previous shop, and I don’t turn down free money), but not before I was totally schooled in the beauty of buying a mattress online.
I connected with Sweet Zzzz recently when it was time to get a new mattress for Dude 1. Being a 16 year old kid, he could probably sleep comfortably with nothing more than a box spring and a blanket, but I figured a comfortable mattress would keep him from moving away and never looking back in a couple of years, so we decided a partnership made perfect sense.
Sweet Zzzz sent us their Affluent Rest Memory Foam Mattress to try.
Like all of their products, it’s made with Eco-friendly materials to make sure that you not only get quality sleep, but have quality air to breathe and water to drink (you guys, there are some sketchy chemicals in non eco-friendly mattresses!). It has their unique O-Cell technology to keep the mattress cool at night (totally comes in handy for a sweaty teenager). And, just in case it’s not the right fit for your back, each of their mattresses has a 100 day full refund return guarantee (so you can really try it before you commit). They also come with a lifetime warranty (which is a big deal when the owner is barely starting his life!).
I thought it was cool that they are also made in the USA and shipped to my house in a box about the size of my 10 year old (just heavier).
It took us less than 10 minutes to set up (it basically unrolls itself and is sleep ready in just hours), and he has been in love with how comfortable it is. In fact, both of his brothers have been caught hanging out on it when he wasn’t home.
If you’re thinking about buying a mattress online, here are some things to know about the process and the products.
Buying a Mattress Online: How to Choose One for Perfect Sleep
Know what you’re looking for.
Think about the things you love and hate about your current mattress and use those to help you begin the buying process. Has it always been too firm or too soft? Do you hate the material of the pillow top? Do you wish it were thicker or thinner?
Think too about how you sleep. Are you a side sleeper or a back sleeper? Does your partner always wake you up when he moves around at night making you want to punch him in the thigh? Do you get hot and sweaty? Do you always have a back ache or hip pain?
Knowing what you want and don’t want in a new mattress will help you narrow the buying field a bit and make buying a mattress online a simpler process.
Because you can actually buy any type of mattress online.
The foam ones that roll up into a ball are the easiest to ship and are super popular right now, but you can buy the good old fashioned spring ones online too.
Which means, your options are unlimited.
Which is awesome when it comes to things like ice cream flavors and donut toppings, but is mostly just frustrating and confusing when it comes to things like mattresses. So don’t rush this process. Unless your mattress caught on fire or is for some other reason entirely unusable, start the process before you reach a mattressless and desperate situation so you have time to do some quality research about what kind of mattress and manufacture is most likely to meet your sleep needs.
Look at what it’s made from.
Not all mattresses are created equal and no two mattresses are the same. Firm to one seller may be downright soft to another. And what’s inside various greatly too.
Sellers like Sweet Zzz who take pride in ensuring that both the consumer and the environment are safe, put a lot of stock in making sure their mattresses are made with the very safest mattress ingredients. You can rest assured that their foams are Low Emission (low VOCS) for indoor air quality, made without prohibited phthalates, ozone depleters, PBDEs, Mercury, Lead and heavy metals, or formaldehyde (I’m all for a deep sleep, but I don’t think I need formaldehyde to get me there.).
You should be able to test it.
At your house.
Make sure you buy from an online retailer that offers full refunds. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a mattress your back hates.
Cool Note: Sweet Zzz offers 100 day full refunds and doesn’t ask you to send returned item back. Instead, they ask you to donate your mattress to a local charity once your return and refund has been processed.
Make sure there is a warranty.
You will probably keep your mattress for 10-15 years so you want to go with a company that has a generous warranty.
Figure out what to do with your old mattress.
You probably can’t just put it on the curb on regular trash day unless you want to have a dirty mattress on your curb for a few months, and buying a mattress online will likely mean no haul away is included for your old one. You will have to manage it on your own by donating it or arranging for it to be hauled away –possibly for a fee.
