Do you know that you can pull up the calendar and find a “holiday” on every single day of the year.
Desperate celebrants can party it up over anything from pistachios to thinking (yep, there exists World Thinking Day, presumably to entice people to, er, think!).
For example, if you’re in a celebrating mood (and are feeling the whole 50 Shades of Grey vibe), today is handcuff day! We can celebrate with a little shackle you to the bed action (you, not me, hard limit).
Not into the kinkyness? That’s cool. Because everyone LOVES hot breakfast, right? Go ahead and have those hot eggs and (turkey) sausage then because February is National Hot Breakfast month. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need a calendar to get behind some hotcakes.
Fortunately for all of you not hot breakfast lovers, February is also American Heart Month.
For many people it means wearing red (because red is an awesome color) and maybe reading an article or two about how heart disease affects people. Other people who aren’t them.
For us, it is so much more.
A couple of years ago Mimi had a heart attack.
She was visiting my grandparents in Kansas with my dad. He called me while I was in the drive thru at Chik-fil-a to deliver the news.
I will never forget that day or the fear that has since burrowed deep down in my soul because of it.
My mom doesn’t have the preventable type of heart disease, she has heart disease caused by a specific defect and there is no cure or way she could’ve prevented it. But, when I think of the pain and suffering and fear and sadness that her episode threw our family into, I think also about all of the people who can prevent themselves and their families from ever experiencing this.
It takes is awareness.
And a heart healthy diet. And consistent exercise. And an overall commitment to health and wellness.
But, it starts with awareness.
Which is why we wear brightly colored red things during February!
Snag yourself something Arguably Awesome this year and make a commitment to keeping hearts healthy!
