Formerly Frumpy Friday. Wearing Denim on Denim?

Denim on denim.

Let’s discuss.

Glamour says it’s all good.

I say, are you sure Galmour?

Because I distinctly recall it not really being that awesome.

And now, I have this denim jacket that I pretty much want to wear with every single thing I own, and I’ve got my fingers and toes double crossed that Glamour knows what they’re talking about on this one (because I have to admit, at least when it comes to those of us of a certain age and, um, size, they are not only wrong, they are gross).  Point is, I need to know if it’s okay to rock it to my heart’s desire (which is always) or not.

It already makes an appearance when I want to downgrade a dress from office to stop-playing-you-don’t-work-in-an-office awesome…

photo(95)

But, can I throw it on with my dark wash skinnies too?  Are there rules about matching the denim colors?  Is it only okay if I wear it with jeans that are colored (like an actual color, not hi-I’m-jeans colored)?!  Why do they have to keep cancelling out hard fast fashion rules I learned never to break in the 90s?!

Because I am seriously too lazy and entirely too hot to don a jean suit and then run back and forth as I set the timer and the autofocus and what not so you can see pictures of me for our discussion, we are going to just talk about how it looks on other people, m’kay?!

So, this?  I’m pretty sure we’re all in agreement with the fact that this is wrong.  On a number of levels…

Denim on denim can be bad.  Frightening even.

I think it’s the denim hat.  But, it could be the denim purse or the denim blazer, or, is that like some sort of freaky denim muscle shirt he’s rocking?

Shiver.

However you break it on down, this is a denim on denim on Justin on Britney fail.

But this…

This works, no?

This looks adorable.

It doesn’t look hot, or stuffy, or 90s.

She looks cool, and chic, and now.  The glasses sorta do it for me, but the shoulder to mid thigh denim coverage just works for her too.

I can’t pull off a short that short or a stance that nonchalant.  But, how about this?

Quiz coral top, $12 / Fat Face denim jacket, $75 / Fat Face skirt, $23 / Seychelles orange sandals / Tote handbag / Madewell stacking bangle / Fantasy Jewelry Box beaded jewelry

This I’m pretty sure I can do without an excess of awkwardness or discomfort thanks, in large part, to the I heart tacos bag.

But what about this?

deni on denim pants

This is where I start to get confused on the matter.  It’s where the do-not-cross-less-you-look-like-Justin-and-Britney-line starts to blur for me.

Am I one denim cowboy hat away from going there?  Or is this still within the confines of looking laid back for a weekend away?!

Is it a go if I promise not to add a denim necktie or a blinged out denim fanny pack?

And, if I swear that I won’t go back to this (I’m wearing a crotch snapped bodysuit in this photo also, if you must know)…

It is rare that I seek help in finding suitable attire; I’ve been down that road before courtesy of one slightly embarrassing reality show appearance, but I’d really love some thoughts on this one.

You know, so I can rock my jean jacket until I wear holes in the armpits and it starts to disintegrate.

*This post has been inspired by Justin, Britney, Fashion Friday, and denim lovers everywhere.

No advice for you hear. I have NO fashion sense whatsoever! Just wanted to say I LOVE that last photo! Classic!!! All the outfits you put together look super cute to me. I can especially see you wearing the one with the I love tacos bag. Love that bag…just too fun! :)

It’s all about the confidence. ;) I think you could get away with an acid washed jumpsuit if you had the right accessories and your killer smile. But I really wouldn’t want you to. I like both looks, honestly!

I think you could definitely rock the denim on denim thing (every time I say that I think it’s something dirty), as long as you accessorize enthusiastically. And don’t wear the crotch snapping shirt.

Just make sure your denims are not the exact same color, and accessorize with non-denim shirts, hats, purses, etc. You should be good to go.

Oh GOODNESS, I remember that Britney-Justin outfit! LOL!

Denim on Denim is great – as long as you follow these tips you shared! Lets not go all 90s now! ;-)

I would totally wear denim on denim, but I’d temper the blue denim with a coloured denim! That being said, your 90s pic took me waaayyyy back… I have a photo of me and my friends dressed very similarly in high school. Anyway, I wanted you to know that I’ve nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. For details, just go here: http://1epicmom.com/2012/07/14/the-versatile-blogger-award/

Oh LAWD! I’m twitching from the awfulness of that one picture. Seriously, don’t they pay people to dress them?

Honestly, I think if you are generally known for having a sense of style, then just go with your gut and you will probably be fine!

I’m pretty sure I meant JACKET not JACK.

Denim jack works too:). And I promise to never hold hands with a denim clad dude. Unless that dude is Justin Timberlake. I can totally forgive him for this transgression.

I see nothing wrong with a denim jack and pants or skirt, but I’m a fashion rebel. I wear what I like. Having said that, if you do go denim on denim, don’t hold hands with someone else also wearing denim all over. That’s just wrong.

I have NO idea about the denim on denim thing but I do know that those are some KILLER booties you are wearing in the top pic!

Thanks! I got those at TJ Maxx for $39 and they are Guess! I think my faveorite places to shop right now (aside from Target) are Ross, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx. I love the surprise scores I get there!

The 90’s have scarred us, both for big hair and denim on denim. I really love big hair though so I wish it would come back in a big way. The denim on denim? I have no idea.

    • Dumb Mom says

      July 14, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Wait? Big hair is out?! Well, I’m maybe going to have to rethink these bangs I just teased and sprayed with half a bottle of Aquanet. Kidding. But, I do have big hair, no matter how hard I try not to.

        July 14, 2012 at 4:11 pm

You? Big hair? Nah. I judge all big hair by Texas standards. Yours isn’t big. It is just right.

“They” wait until “they” are sure you’ve thrown out every last favorite piece from a trend before they bring it back, so you have to go buy new stuff. I guess I showed them!

Love the glasses girl look, but I’m a little short to wear it, I think.

I like the look with the coral tank top, because…I like it. I almost threw the computer down and ran to the mall.

    • Dumb Mom says

      July 14, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Threw the computer down! The funny thing for me is that I can find all of this stuff online, but I feel like I need to try it on because I’m one of those people who orders things and then, if they don’t work out, will put them in a box in the corner to return where they will sit for the next 6 months. Such a waste of money all because I’m too lazy to go to the post office or even call UPS to come get it!

hahah! I was also scared of looking like Britney & Justin when I first tried the denim-on-denim trend (here if you’re interested in seeing how it ended up), but I decided to try it out anyway. I think it went fairly well. :)

I like A, but I am with you on breaking this rule. It all seems very strange to me. Just don’t start pegging your pants or wearing two brightly colored slouch socks and I think you’ll be ok ;) And I can never look that nonchalant either……

    • Dumb Mom says

      July 14, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Nonchalance is not a skill I have. It generally comes out as awkward and sweaty. I actually miss pegging my pants and then covering them in slouchy socks. And LA Gears. I was an LA Gear girl for sure.

  16. Kmama says

    July 13, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I think both A and B are a go, if you were to ask me. But you probably shouldn’t ask me. I know nothing about fashion.

What I can’t get over is the tucked in shirt in B. I haven’t tucked in a shirt in I don’t know how long.

    • Dumb Mom says

      July 14, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Me either. I have considered tucking in a shirt, but I’ve not actually had the gall to do it!
