Before we jump into the how to wear leggings thing, let’s talk about leggings as pants.
For years I’ve been all, nah girl, nah. Leggings aren’t pants, they’re leggings, and they are meant to be worn under things, not instead of things.
You can’t just pretend they are something they aren’t. They don’t work like that. They’re in their box and you need to keep them there.
I know, that sounds judgy of me, which is whack because if there is one thing I’m not it’s judgmental about style. Like, if you want to wear a velour sweat suit to work on Tuesday, then by all means, rock that out girlfriend. I will recommend you go ahead and not do that, but if you’re feeling yourself and you’re all LET ME LIVE, know that I will fist bump you in the hallway and side eye the haters on your behalf.
My whole thing is not to tell you that your style game is in the trash can, it’s to inspire you to develop a style game that makes you feel good about yourself.
I want you to love your look as much as I love the bag of dark chocolate covered pretzels I have stashed under my desk. I want your confident smile to be lit up because you know you’re killin’ it.
And, sure, I know, covering yourself in fleece isn’t the only low self esteem red flag on the planet, but it does send a message to people. And, just to give you an example, I think we all can agree that their response to you dressed in mom jeans and a zipper hoodie at your 20th high school reunion is gonna be more…
than the standard human lady is comfortable with.
I don’t want that for you. I literally never want this face to greet yours.
I want you to walk into that moldy smelling gymnasium and every other room you walk into like this…
and have people respond to your apparent awesome accordingly.
I mean, seriously, look at Tasty! In prison and still working it. That can totally be you (minus the taupe prison issued scrub suit)!
Which is why we are going to have a grown up lady talk about leggings. As they pertain to being pants.
First, let me recant any previous statements I may have made due to my own bad experiences about them being pants. I have determined that yes, leggings can be pants. Heck, they can be bras if you want them to. It’s really more about creating a look that you are comfortable with because it allows you to feel good.
So sure, pants them out.
Maybe try something printed? Or, something with some slimming help from Spanx? And, I think most of us can agree that a nice pair of jeggings never hurt anybody…
Printed leggings, $35. Spanx leggings, $68. Jeggings, $50.
However, if your body style is anything like mine, they really will work best with a little rump coverage. Because me in a crop top with leggings is a scary and uncomfortable thing.
I like to wear them with dresses or tunics and sometimes even with a blazer and a scarf…
At the opposite end, you can pair them happily with boots, sneakers, flats, and heels.
That’s the reason I recommend adding them to most wardrobes, they’re just too versatile not to.
I do want to note that all leggings are not created equal. You have to pay attention to thickness.
The pair I am wearing above is from Aventura* –I love their weight because they provide ample coverage and even some support. And, they won’t break the bank while they’re at it.
I also have a fleece lined pair that I really dig. Because winter don’t play.

I heart leggings. Though yes, I need to pair them with something that covers my booty.
