I was invited to join Disney in Los Angeles for the Christopher Robin movie premier and press junket earlier this month.
I had the opportunity to experience a star-studded red carpet premier and interview talented members of the Christopher Robin film cast, including Jim Cummings, the voice actor who plays Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Hayley Atwell who’s cast as Evelyn Robin, Christopher’s wife, and the talented Ewan McGregor who plays the title character, Christopher Robin. I also got to visit Disney Animation Studios to talk to the creators and animators behind Wreck It Ralph, interview Avengers: Infinity War producer, Trinh Tran, and much more.
It was a whirlwind trip and I truly enjoyed meeting the people who bring these wonderful films to life.
Perhaps most delightful, however, was the young Christopher Robin cast member who joined us for our very first interview on press day.
Bronte Carmichael walked into the conference room looking like a typical eight or nine year old girl.
She was wearing a brightly colored outfit, her shoulder length hair parted in the center. She came in smiling to our applause and took her seat at the end of the table greeting us with a bright smile and a confident hello.
I was instantly impressed.
As a mom to three kids who have been eight already, I know that they don’t always feel comfortable speaking in front of a crowd of grown-ups.
My youngest son, Dude 3, has even had the unique opportunity to enjoy a little camera time himself, spending a day on set working on a project with Kelly Ripa herself. Even he would still struggle somewhat in this situation.
But not Bronte Carmichael, she’s quite the precocious child and is able to express herself quite eloquently for someone who hasn’t even existed on this planet for more than a decade.
She came in, ready to answer our hard hitting questions (and by hard hitting I mean the most difficult question someone asked her was probably what does she like to play when she’s not working), without a hint of nerves. And, added awesome, her answers were actually quite informative and entertaining!
For those who’ve not seen Disney’s Christopher Robin movie yet (not sure what you’re waiting for!), Bronte plays Madeline Robin, the young daughter of Christopher (Ewan McGregor) and Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) Robin. She is struggling to deal with the idea of being shipped off to boarding school for the upcoming school year while also lamenting the lack of attention her and her mother are receiving from her overworked and unengaged father, Christopher Robin.
She clearly loves him and is desperately seeking his affections while also trying to remain understanding of his situation. She eventually meets Christopher Robins’ friends from the Hundred Acre Woods. They convince her that they need her help to save her father and his job which takes her on a solo adventure from the countryside into London, Pooh and friends in tow.
Take a peek at the trailer to see young Bronte Carmichael in action…
Her character is strong, independent, and intelligent, but also fun, and endearing, just like Bronte herself.
Here are a few interesting things we learned about Bronte Carmichael from our interview with her.
10 Fun Facts to Know About Christopher Robins’ Bronte Carmichael
Bronte Carmichael is from a film making family.
Her mother is actress and director, Katy Carmichael, and her father, Tristan Sturrock, is an actor as well.
And both of her parents were also in Disney’s Christopher Robin.
Her mother plays her character’s grandmother, Christopher Robins’ mother, and her father plays Christopher’s father, Bronte’s character’s grandfather.
She enjoys all of the characters from the Hundred Acre Wood, but quite likes Piglet.
Piglet is the Pooh character Bronte most identifies with, especially when it comes to acting, but she also sees a little of Tigger in herself. Like when she learned she was coming to L.A. and going to Disneyland –she felt pretty Tigger- like then!
Bronte also shared that, when they finished shooting the film, she was given the stuffed Piglet from the movie to take home.
Which is perfect because she’s somewhat of a stuffed animal collector.
As she said in our interview:
I have lots and lots of stuffed animals at home… And I like to talk to them and play with them with my sister as well.
She enjoyed filming the action scenes in the movie most of all.
She shared that she even did some of her own stunts.
But, not all of them because she did have a stunt double.
As well as a picture double. Bronte shared that both of the girls became her good friends on set. They spent their down time playing and making their own silent movies, including a pretty memorable James Bond flick. Apparently the girls really do look quite similar because members of the cast and crew were always getting them confused.
She had an interesting start to her acting career.
Being in a family of actors, Bronte got her first role from a friend of the family and she was just asked to be in projects from time to time. After doing her first film, she realized how much she truly liked it. The rest, as the say, is history!
Like all children, Bronte enjoys playtime too.
Spending time playing with her sister, making up games, and playing action games are some of her favorite playtime activities. She also loves to draw. When you watch Christopher Robin, be on the lookout for some of Bronte’s own artwork that appears in the movie!
Outside of Winnie the Pooh, The Lion King is one of Bronte’s favorite Disney films.
Bronte shared that The Lion King was one of her favorite movies when she was younger and, if she could be in a film with any Disney characters it would probably be the ones from that one.
Bronte, like to many of us, believes Pooh to be a timeless character.
She explains that he’s not just for kids and not only for adults and he should always be a special thing. As she says, “Pooh is a very special character.”
I can’t agree with you more, Bronte!
Disney’s Christopher Robin open in theaters nationwide on August 3, 2018.
