I’m a huge proponent of buying timeless, quality pieces that will last you for seasons.
I have a pair of boots I’ve had for years and, prior to my not-that-big-of-a-deal-but-I’m-gonna-act-like-it dramatic weight loss, I knew this dress from What NOT to Wear was one I’d be wearing for years to come…
If anyone wants to buy it you totally can. It’s a size 12 Donna Morgan dress that I’m selling for $20 on eBay!
That didn’t work out the way I planned, but whatever, I’ve still got the boots. And a clutch I’ve had since 8th grade.
Some things are just eternal like that and I like to have a few of those well made, classically styled items for longevity.
But, I’m also a fan of infusing your style with fun, on trend pieces.
It keeps your look young and if you shop right, it’s a great way to also have a little fun with fashion.
Since that’s what fashion is all about anyway, right?
Here are some of my favorite budget fashion finds for August:
1. Studded heart sweater. 2. Comfy ballet flats. 3. Henley top. 4. Workout capris. 5. Colorblock tote. 6. Jean jacket. 7. Urban OG dress. 8. Leopard print wedges that I’m not linking to because I don’t want anyone else to buy them ever*. 9. Stylish sweatshirt.
When it comes to shopping for The Dudes my approach is similar.
I buy #1 really great clothing. Clothing designed to last a few seasons even if his body says otherwise. I do this so that we can pass things down (total score for having same gender children).
But, there are certain things that The Dudes like to have all their own. Things like socks and underwear of course (no one likes wearing someone else’s old undies!), but also shoes.
My Dudes are all three super athletic and shoes is the one article of clothing that they care about. They like to have a nice pair of kicks on when they hit the field/court/whatever surface they are playing on, and when they do they feel more confident.
I totally get how a new pair of hot shoes can make you feel like a freaking rock star.
But, Dude shoes are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. Especially when one of those Dudes is already wearing MAN Dude shoes.
So, we help them set a yearly cool shoes budget.
We let them each choose one shoe to splurge on each year, usually right at the start of basketball season, and it is the only shoe splurge they get for the year (everything else will come from a hand down or as a bargain/sale purchase). We talk to them about bargain shopping for their splurge, looking for a sale price, and waiting until the season when they will get the most use out of them. My oldest will even stalk online stores for sales for weeks before he commits (he’s frugal like that).
If they want to buy anything else fancy, they have to do so with their own money.
Right now #2 is saving for some KDs (you’re a total DudeMom if you know what those are).
Want some more great ways to save this school year?

*So, about the link to the shoes. I lost it. Don’t hate me, but I did and I got tired of looking for it. I figured I’d post them and then like maybe one of you could find it. And tell me. But don’t buy them because they’re MINE. All. Mine.
