Dead of summer, in the middle of a heat wave, sounds like the perfect time to go for ice cream at one of the best ice cream spots in Frederick!
Hands down, I’m giving the crown to 4 the Love of Sweets.
This local treat shop and café boasts a signature concoction that friends have traveled far and wide to enjoy: the cupcake topped milkshake.
It is a delicious ice cream concoction topped with a decadent, homemade cupcake. You can select one of five flavors: Death By Chocolate, Vanilla Dream, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Birthday Cake, or Chocolate Covered Strawberry.
And, from what I hear, no matter which way you go you’re bound to experience a few moments of ecstasy. Personally, I’m a hardcore chocolate girl so I’ve not strayed even a hair away from their Death By Chocolate option, but my kids have been a bit more adventurous and swear by the Birthday Cake flavor.
A milkshake is a definite must when you visit and though we often enjoy them solo – because real talk, this thing is more than a snack, it’s a whole meal – 4 The Love of Sweets is also a café with a full menu of edible goodies to choose from.
Just to give you an idea about their options, my 15 year old whose belly is rarely too full for good food, often enjoys his shake with a side of fries. They also offer sweet and savory gourmet waffles (order as a meal and you get a cupcake too!), panini’s, French toast, and more.
They are a must visit for anyone who finds themselves in Frederick, for life or even just for a few days.

South Mountain Creamery
We’ve been visiting SMC every summer since my boys were tiny. They loved feeding the baby cows and getting farm fresh ice cream. It’s an awesome place to learn about dairy farming in America.
In addition to their delicious, farm fresh ice cream and other dairy products you can purchase in their farm store, SMC offer grocery delivery including farm fresh glass bottled milk, certified humane cage free eggs, fresh ice cream, butter, yogurt, cheese, plus grass-fed beef, pork, chicken, local and organic fruits and vegetables, and much more.

Frederick Fudge and Ice Cream
Located in historic downtown Frederick, this shop has been sitting proudly with its bear sign on the corner of Church and East streets for as long as I can remember (note: we’ve only lived here since 2006 so I’m not a native). The best part for us is that not only do they have delicious, unique ice cream flavors (oatmeal cookie is my favorite) they also have fudge for the child in our house who doesn’t eat ice cream (yes, he’s mine, and no, I don’t believe it).

Pretzel and Pizza Creations
Noe, hear me out, they don’t specialize in ice cream exactly, but they scoop it and they make milkshakes and you can also get a pretzel alongside of their ice cream. That’s a pairing you won’t know you love until you try it!
