We’ve all been in those situations –you have a major deadline, or a trip, or a the opening night of your kid’s school play and you still have to drive all over town to find a pair of overalls that fit your 7 year old so you can make a Papa Bear costume for him to wear.
Or, the unfortunate one I had to deal with just this past week, as I sat at my dining room table scratching the welts that had mysteriously popped up all over my torso and neck (thank goodness they didn’t climb up to my face!).
It was a Sunday evening, the doctor’s office was obviously closed, I felt like ripping my every inch of my epidermis all of my body, I’d already downed enough Benadryl to make me feel like I’d been hit by a bus, and barring a visit to the emergency room, my options for quick, affordable care were looking pretty bleak.
The answer came to me as I was opening up my phone to ask Google if I was going to die and instead stumbled across the MDLive App where I could get a virtual doctor visit that I’d gained access to as part of my membership with Healthplan USA.
I’d downloaded the app that provides virtual doctor visits previously and hadn’t had occasion to use it. While I could’ve honestly done without this particular occasion, it was the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the service and see if it could work well for me and my family.
I feared that getting started would require a bunch of information and time, but it was such a simple process. I was able to easily complete the sign up in less than 2 minutes, even under the influence Benadryl and covered in calamine lotion.
To launch my virtual doctor visit, I just put in a bit of basic info and was able to shoot the doc a note about my issue (my skin is BASICALLY ON FIRE!). It even gave me the option to upload a picture (don’t worry, I will spare you).
A few minutes later (lost track, but I’d guess a little under 10) and I was in touch with a board-certified doctor who let me know I was going to survive.
And, that I probably had some form of contact dermatitis that would resolve itself if I gave the Benadryl time to work.
There were some more tips about the what to do’s if that I am happy to say I did not need to employ this time around.
The entire experience took about 20 minutes and, oddly enough, the process of getting the info was enough to take my mind off the itching long enough for it to subside a bit.
I fell into a deep sleep (thank you, Benadryl), and awoke to less welty skin and tolerable itching.
The entire event was behind me in a day or two and I hope to never face whatever evil pathogen caused that again.
As much as I hated that this allergic reaction is what provided an intro to MDLive, I am happy to know that I can have a virtual doctor visit whenever I need to. This great service is available as part of my Healthplan USA membership.
The way mysterious illnesses and strange injuries like to plague my kids, I know it’s going to come in handy again and again. And, without a copay to access it, or an exhausting trip to the urgent care center or emergency room, it truly makes getting the care you and your family need more accessible and affordable.
