As much as I hate and despise winter and winter like weather conditions, there is one thing that is mostly just bad although I’m choosing not to focus on that for the purposes of this post slightly redeeming about the weather that traps us in our home and keeps The Dudes couped up and stir crazy: we get to spend quality time with each other.
Awesome, right?!
Mostly I spend my time Tweeting and reading vampire books and watching Season 2 Volume 1 of Glee working, but every now and then I turn away from that distraction and focus on my Dudes.
Camera in hand of course.
It is when I do this that I realize all of the mind-blowingly amazing things they teach me every time I stop for a moment and let them.
10 Things Being a Dude Mama Has Taught Me
1. You never know what you’ll find in the laundry. Toy soliders? Check. Matchbox car? Check. My pilfered bracelet? Check. Stray coins, a fruit snack and a COMIC BOOK?!
Yeah, that is a washed and dried comic book Dude #1 had in his pocket! By the looks of it, I think we need to have a little conversation about objectification of women. And boobies.
2. Swords will be left on the stairs, in the fridge, and possibly even in the toilet.
3. You will never need to hire a yard company or a snow removal service since you made one.
4. Band-Aids fix everything. No really. EVERYTHING.
5. Best friends are forever.
6. Never trust a guy in a plaid shirt. They may be cute as a button, but they are also sneaky saboteurs who are plotting where they’ll leave their next mom snaring booby trap. Probably on the stairs. Or, in the toilet (See #2 above).
7. Some of my happiest moments will be enjoyed on a basketball court (or a soccer field, or in a stadium of some sort).
8. If you don’t get your Dudes a dog, they will make one. Out of their baby brother. The fact that he will be 100% behind this hair-brained idea will not surprise you in the least.
9. Cowboys can wear any kind of hat they want. It’s all about the horse anyway.
10. They love their mama. Like nobody’s business.
And, can you even believe that I don’t have one single picture, taken in the last 12 months that could serve as proof of this fact?!
You’re just gonna have to take my word for it.
Have photos to share this week?! Angie and I, voyeurs that we are, wanna see! Link here at the Casa, or over there at the Circus, either way it’s the original Wordful Wednesday just doubled up on the awesome!
I love this story. Wish I had all boys. I think I could take all the farting in exchange for the 13yo angst.
your photos are always so great. I love the light sabor in the toilet . . . although it’s probably funnier in retrospect lol.
can honestly say i’ve never found a sword hanging out of my toilet!
I love it! I wish I had boys, they sound mischievous but so much fun! But, I think any toy in the toilet would give me a brain hemorrhage. Maybe one day, I’ll see the joy in boys!
I especially like the innocent look while holding Woody. So gosh darn cute! I have a feeling my oldest will also make a puppy out of her younger sister since I don’t want a dog anytime soon. OH LAWD.
I second that emotion! Great pics of such cute memories! Thanks for sharing and for the linky.
Love the pics! These remind me of days at my house. With 5 kids, life is NEVER boring!
EVERYTHING is sooo true!
I love the bandaid on the controller. That is epic.
And the one with Woody? Sell it to Disney. Seriously! This could make your millions.
Oh, and a while back you asked who we’d like to meet in the blog world and I said Ree Drummond. You said that would be like asking to meet JT.
Well. I met her. :))))
I love the Best Friends photo!!! Beautifully captured!!
my oldest always makes her sister be a dog too. She’ll tie the “leash” around her belt loop – at least it isn’t their necks. :)
i love the BFF picture. That is such a sweet moment you captured.
I can’t decide which is my favorite…the sword in the toilet or the ready made snow shoveling company….
You never fail to make me laugh.
I’m hoping no one calls social services on me for this photo ;-)
I got my kids a dog and Baby Girl still calls her little brother her puppy. Crazy kids.
And can I just say how adorable that photo of #3 and Woody is. That’s what I call frameable.
Being a mom to boys is definitely an adventure.. and quite interesting at times. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
My son’s best friend is his blue blankie, which he takes with him everywhere, and refers to as she (as in where is she). Best friends are forever!
I adore this post. . . adore it. I was so nervous about being a boy mama but I have learned that it is AWESOME; he’s only one, but already does so many boy things that make me LAUGH (like turning EVERYTHING into a sword or other such weapon — seriously, are they born with this love of weaponry?) .
I can’t wait to see how it all goes as he gets older. . . especially after reading this post.
I love your post.
The toilet one makes me shiver. Like I’m so paranoid when my kids go in the bathroom and it seems they were in there an hr!!!!
Then I go in and *faint*
Best friends are forever photo is made for tv! :)
And seriously, when ever do you see moms in any photo. I was just thinking the other day that I’d love to have photos of me with my kids. I felt really sad about that.
Happy WW!
Life never does not prepare you properly for being the mother of boys. It is definately on-the-job training at its finest.
Great narration along with your cool pics. I especially like the “snow labor” one. We do the same thing here on our ranch… get all the grandkids involved with the chores. Yep, farm labor! lol
Game winning shot? Are you serious? That is so awesome!!
I don’t have boys, but I imagine it’s like having your own sports league, traveling circus, frat house, secret service team, work crew and lovefest rolled into one. Luck you!
Loved this post. Especially the part about the ready made dog. :)
I love it!!!! Never trust a guy in a plaid shirt. rofl…
I love the “dog” photo! I have one boy with another on the way, it’s good to see what I’m in store for.
As a fellow momma to three boys, I can vouch for each of these, and then some! I love being a boy mom…
This post is so adorable. The sword in the toilet and the dog thing cracked me up!
I love it – and can relate to a lot of it, even though I only have one, and she’s a girl. Finding dinosaurs in the laundry is a regular thing – and having a sword left in odd places. ;)
You make being a dude mama sound pretty darn good, especially that bit about having a snow army.
I live in a house with mostly dudes. There is one confusing girl here, in fact she gets my post for today.
And I would just like to totally agree with about the laundry basket thing. I need to get better at looking in there before I put clothes in the washer b/c my washer is not really a fan of washing things like shoes and zhu zhu pets that are not clothes.
This was hysterical!! Being a dude mom, I can attest – my son and I went on “date night” to Steak and Shake Saturday night. There were a bunch of little girls dressed to the nines along with their dads who had all been to father/daughter dance. I was just happy DS had COMBED for the night. Standards …..
I’m a dude mama too so I can relate! So true about finding swords EVERYWHERE!
I love that you “made” a snow removal crew. That cracked me up. We actually have 3 dogs and they still make believe that they are each other’s dogs. Play with the ones we have girls. As a mama of 3 girls I see some of the same things but it is a barbie in my bathroom or my littlest pet shop crap dumped out right where I am walking. Yep, that was yesterday and I almost fell over – literally. Happy Wednesday mama!
My son is 10mo. I see my future in this post and it is post joyful and totally terrifying!!
What a fun life you have:-)
A light sabre, band aids, and cowboys…can’t ask for more!
That has got to be my favorite post you’ve ever done. I just loved this. The little lessons and the photos were just precious.
You’ve inspired me to write something similar about what my girls have taught me. :-)
My youngest girl is the worst with leaving stuff in her pockets! I have washed the craziest stuff. Like rocks.
Love that game-winning shot!
That is the best fact, boys love their mommies!!!!
And come to think of it, I don’t have proof of that either. I’m gonna work on that one!
Yes, I’m always amazed and a little frightened at what I find in the laundry….even with only one boy here! Though, even with a girl, I’m still likely to find her knee deep in her big brother’s toys…tonight, while he played Battleship, she played with his Harry Potter legos. :> I’d wish you a great week, but I suspect your Dudes will have many adventures to keep it entertaining! :>
My three-year-old son has the same hat and wears it all the time! And, yes, I’ve been taught many of the same things.
Muahaha – using their brother as a dog. I can SO relate to that. Kids are just a strange breed, but boys – boys are just plain weird.
Haha, as always, GREAT photos, but I really loved the story behind them. I’m a chick mama, so I really appreciate this inside look at what it’s like to be a dude mama!
So funny. Love the band-aid pic. That is so my daughter.
LOVE the hat!!
Some days I am so happy to have girls. Although you’d be amazed at where I’ve found Polly Pockets, Barbie dolls and various hair accessories. I think my husband would give his eye teeth for a bit more testosterone in the house.
As always, your post made me smile.
lol i love the idea of number 3. no shoveling EVER!
I have a lot to look forward too – which is one of the reasons I love seeing your pictures…
My fav here is the last one – adorable!!
Emily
Oh my gosh! The light saber in the toilet? LOL!!
I shared my giveaway post but it has a couple of pics and it’s a really cool product that I know even you will love. (so come enter, k?)
LOVE that shot of your little guy and Woody. :D
Give me the cold any day! Our hot and humid summer weather is driving me crazy and the floods and cyclones haven’t brought much joy either….oh how I wish I was over there in the snow with you guys!
Thanks so much for having me today. I love your blog and your wonderful words of wisdom!
Best wishes,
Natasha.
The dudes are really uber cute.. Happy WW
Ha, loved this! Truly captures the essence of your lil dudes! :)
I could not stop laughing at the laundry and toilet! I ahve 2 girls and some strange things have shown up in those places too! You just gotta love kids!

That is because you are so dedicated, capturing their moments that you aren’t in them. I have the same problem. Every family outing we take it looks like my husband is having all the fun and doing all the work. So not true. But I LOVED this post. As a mom of two boys myself I can totally relate, especially with 4, 5, 8,9. Oh and 10 too of course! :)
LOL, I love seeing the differences between households w/ boys and ones w/ girls. We don’t have swords – but I’m always stepping on teensy tiny doll pieces. But little sisters make good dogs too, apparently! :)
I’ve got 4 boys….that list is right on the money!!! I don’t have any pics with my boys either. If you looked at just their scrapbooks, you would think I didn’t exist.
I sure was hoping for a picture for the last one! Maybe you can work on that!
Your post never made me want a boy more! So sweet, and mischievous all at the same time.
I loved this post.
#1 totally made me smile because it reminded me of living at home with 3 brothers. whenever they were done doing laundry you could literally open up a paper store with all the random pieces of paper that came spilling out of the dryer.
#3 is exactly how my parents thought and why i know i never needed to know how to do boy stuff (change tire, check oil ect) i had 3 brothers, a father, a husband, a son, a stepson and eventually a total of 8 brother in laws.
#8 made me smile because we used to do that growing up too. we’d use belts LOL

omg! my comment is totally in the future!
Bad mama confession: I am so extremely grateful that our 8″ of snow came and went never to be seen again. I just don’t think I’d survive all that quality time (esp considering I start contemplating a jail break on hour 2 of a snow day).
That best friends photo is a heart-tugger!
I LOVE that pic with #3 and Woody! That is all I hear all day long…WOOOOOODDDDDYYYYYYYYYYY!
Love the photos! I’ve found some pretty odd stuff in our toilets, too, courtesy of the kids. Wait – I did not mean that how it sounded!
